Working with and reacting to your costars is obviously a big part of an actorâs process. Can you talk about a scene or a quality of your performance that resulted from working with Anya Taylor-Joy and Nicole Kidman?
For me, it was important to find the right balance between the movieâs big set pieces and what I consider to be the heart of the movie, the family drama. [Up until] the scene where Amleth confronts Queen Gudrún, the whole point of his journey is avenging his father and saving his mother. And when Amleth gets to Fjölnirâs farm, he believes that his mother was either brainwashed by his uncle or that sheâs just faking their relationship because sheâs being held captive. Amleth has waited twenty-five years for this moment to tell his mother that he is her son, that he is alive, and that he is there to save her. But when Amlethâs big moment comes, the scene doesnât go quite as heâd planned. Itâs a beautifully written scene, and we filmed it after a couple of weeks of shooting on big set pieces. I love shooting big action sequences, too, but it was also kind of lovely to be in a room with Rob, Jarin, and Nicoleâwho is one of the finest actors out thereâfor a long, meaty scene. It was definitely one of the highlights, if not the highlight, of the entire shoot. It was also very important to set up Amlethâs relationship with Olga, especially because Anya and I donât have that many scenes together at the beginning of the movie. Olgaâs so integral to the story and to the fate of my character, so we tried to ensure that viewers understand her importance and the role that she plays in Amlethâs fate.
